The game of Cribbage has been played for centuries. It is a game that requires both skill and luck (mostly skill) , thus making it fun for everyone that plays, from the novice to the expert. However, cribbage terminology can take a while to pick up. That’s why I’ve provided this easy guide of cribbage terms for you.

Crib – The crib is established at the beginning of the hand. It is formed by four cards – two from each player. These cards are set aside for the dealer to score after the use of the dealer’s hand.
Cut Card – Also called the start card. This is the card cut by either player at the start of the game or match. This card determines the dealer.
Flush – A flush consists of four or five cards of the same suit held in the hand. A four card flush counts four points. Five cards of the same suit (cards in hand plus the starter card) will count five points in the hand or crib.
Game Hole – Pegging hole number 121.
Go - Go is called by a player that cannot play a card without exceeding a cumulative count of 31. The opponent will score one point at that time. If the opponent is able to play a card and reach exactly 31 he will score two.
Hand – A hand consists of the six cards each player is dealt at the beginning of a hand. It also represents the four cards each player has remaining after contributing two cards to the crib.


His Heels – This refers to a Jack as a starter card. It counts two points for the dealer.
His Nobs – A Jack of the same suit as the starter card – can be either in the hand or in the crib – counts one point.
Match – One or more games played between two players constitutes a match.
Pair – A Pair refers to two cards of the same rank.
Peg – A peg is a small marker that fits into the holes of a Cribbage board. This is used for scoring purposes. As each player places the peg into the board to track the score they are “pegging”.
Pegging – Pegging refers to recording the points by advancing the rear peg in front of the front peg.
Pone – The player that is the non-dealer, the dealer’s opponent.
Score – Score refers to any points earned by a player.
Scoring – The earning of points is scoring.
Shuffle – This is the random missing of the cards.
Skunk – To win by 31 points or more.
Skunk Double – Winning by 61 points or more.
Starter Card – This is the card that is cut and placed on the remainder of the pack – it is used in counting the value of each hand and the crib.
Stink Hole – Hole number 120 is referred to as the stink hole because it is one short of 121, the game hole.
Straight – A straight is also called a run. This is the sequence of three or more consecutive cards during the play of a game. The cards can be played in any order during the plays but the sequence cannot be interrupted by other cards.
Street – Street refers to a stretch of 30 holes on the Cribbage Board. The first street consists of holes 1 – 30, the second street of holes is 31 – 60, followed by 61 – 90, and the last street is holes 91 – 120.
