The game of Cribbage has been passed down through the generations. It
actually began in the 1600’s. Part of the uniqueness of this game is the
way points are scored. A Cribbage Board is used. This game board is usually
made of wood and is of a rectangular shape. However, there are many variations
on the design as well as the material that the boards are made of. The
variations add to the interest and attraction of the game.
The function of the Cribbage Board is to track scores. The board will
have holes drilled or cut into it that accommodate pegs. Each player will
move a pair of pegs up the outside and down the inside of their side of
the board. The front peg will show the current score and the rear peg
acts to show the previous score. This helps to prevent any mistakes in
score-keeping and also curtails cheating.
The holes are clearly marked or divided into sets of five. This helps
to tally any large scores quickly. The players are able to quickly and
easily determine who is winning and by how much.
A complete trip up and down the board is 60 holes. Each end has a finishing
hole into which the winning peg is placed. Most players agree to play
either to 121 or 61. However, some games are played to 181. The agreement
should be made before the game starts.
Cribbage Boards are usually made of wood but some are made of marble,
glass, plastic, stone and various other matter. Some are foldable making
them easy and convenient for travel. Some players construct their own
Cribbage Boards in order to make them uniquely theirs.
Valuable antique Cribbage Boards can also be found.
As a matter of fact, a quality Cribbage Board often becomes a family heirloom.
